June 2020 Wrap Up

by Edward Paul Vallejo

As June comes to a close, let’s take a look back at the state of the COVID-19 pandemic, our Maps Of The Week, selected health observances and events, and the launch of our new Instagram page to coincide with PublicHealthMaps’ third birthday!

COVID-19 Status

With more than 10 million cases in 188 countries, the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread without signs of letting up. The United States now has one quarter of the world’s known 500,000 deaths due to COVID-19 with states like New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut imposing travel restrictions from other states with increased rates of coronavirus transmission.

These include states like Arizona, Texas and Florida that started to reopen fully and are now reporting their highest case numbers yet with cases climbing overall in 22 states. As public health experts had warned, opening up could possibly lead to a surge in coronavirus cases which is what appears to be happening now.

Sweden, which never fully closed during the coronavirus pandemic, is now suffering roughly twice as many infections and five times as many deaths as their Scandanavian neighbors of Norway, Denmark, and Finland combined. Their neighbors have closed their borders to Sweden as a result of its lax approach to combating COVID-19.

The World Health Organization has reported that Latin America is now the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic.

As Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the WHO, stated “the worse is yet to come”.

JUNE 2020 events calendar

What’s Happening in June 2020? highlighted selected monthly, weekly, and daily events and health observances throughout the month. We shine the spotlight on selected June events that you should be aware of not just for June, but throughout the year.

MONTHLY

PTSD Awareness Month

Even though PTSD treatments work, most people who have PTSD don't get the help they need. June is PTSD Awareness Month. Help us spread the word that effective PTSD treatments are available. Everyone with PTSD—whether they are Veterans or civilian survivors of sexual assault, serious accidents, natural disasters, or other traumatic events—needs to know that treatments really do work and can lead to a better quality of life.

Help raise awareness, spread the word, partner with others, understand PTSD & PTSD Treatment, and get support for yourself or others in a crisis.

Immigrant Heritage Month

We all know someone with an immigration experience or have an immigrant heritage story of our own. This year, we'll be in every state asking people to come together and #CelebrateImmigrants.

National Safety Month

This year, the National Safety Council NSC featured some pressing topics, including, but not limited to:

  • Mental Health

  • Ergonomics

  • Building a Safety Culture

  • Driving

Use the resources provided to help keep you and those around you safe at the workplace and at home.

WEEKLY

National Lightning Safety Awareness Week (June 21 - 27)

National Lightning Safety Awareness week was started in 2001 to call attention to this underrated killer. Since then, U.S. lightning fatalities have dropped from about 50 per year to about 30. This reduction in fatalities is largely due to greater awareness of the lightning danger, and people seeking safety when thunderstorms threaten.

Each day of Lightning Safety Awareness Week featured a different topic on lightning safety:

Learn and understand these lessons well so that you can practice them throughout the entire year to protect yourself and others!

National Mosquito Control Awareness Week (June 21 - 27)

As highlighted by our June 23rd Map Of The Week above, it is important to understand how critical mosquito control is in our lives. This will be especially important as climate change continues to ravage our planet.

Each year, the last week of June is declared National Mosquito Control Awareness Week by the American Mosquito Control Association. AMCA's "MosquitoWeek" educates the general public about the significance of mosquitoes in their daily lives and the important service provided by the mosquito control workers throughout the United States and worldwide.

DAILY

World Sickle Cell Day (June 19th)

In the United States, nearly 100,000 individuals have SCD. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that SCD affects 1 out of every 365 black or African-American births, and 1 out of every 16,300 Hispanic-American births.

World Oceans Day (June 8th)

For 2020 World Oceans Day is growing the global movement to call on world leaders to protect 30% of our blue planet by 2030. This critical need is called 30x30. By safeguarding at least 30% of our ocean through a network of highly protected areas we can help ensure a healthy home for all!
