National Lightning Safety Awareness week was started in 2001 to call attention to this underrated killer. Since then, U.S. lightning fatalities have dropped from about 50 per year to about 30. This reduction in fatalities is largely due to greater awareness of the lightning danger, and people seeking safety when thunderstorms threaten. During National Lightning Safety Awareness Week, we encourage you to learn more about lightning and lightning safety.

  • Check water conditions before going in by looking at the local beach forecast before you leave for the beach and talking to the lifeguard at the beach.

  • Only swim at a beach with lifeguards. The chances of drowning at a beach with lifeguards are 1 in 18 million (U.S. Lifesaving Association).

  • Don't assume! Great weather for the beach does not always mean it's safe to swim or even play in the shallows. Rip currents often form on calm, sunny days.

  • Learn how to spot a rip current. The Break the Grip of the Rip free online training will help you learn how to spot a rip current.

  • What are scientists doing to keep swimmers safer? Find out in this video: Predict the Rip

  • Rip currents aren't the only deadly beach hazard. Learn more about dangerous waves and other hazards and why you should never to turn your back on the ocean.

Website: https://aboutgerd.org/

The 20th Annual GERD Awareness Week is November 17-23, 2019. Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a very common disorder. Each year around the week of Thanksgiving, IFFGD encourages people experiencing the symptoms, which may be GERD-related, to consult their physicians and to contact us to receive information and support regarding the condition.

IFFGD first designated GERD Awareness Week in November 1999. The event is listed on the U.S. National Health Observances calendar. Health observances are days, weeks, or months devoted to promoting particular health concerns. Health professionals, teachers, community groups, and others can use these special times to sponsor health promotion events and stimulate awareness of health issues.

North American Occupational Safety and Health Week

North American Occupational Safety and Health Week

Social: #SafetyAndHealthWeek #NAOSH

Twitter: @NAOSHWeek @ASSPSafety

Facebook: @ASSESafety

Website: http://www.naosh.org/english/

NAOSH Week was first launched in June 1997, marked by an agreement between Canada, the United States and Mexico. CSSE's Canadian Occupational Health and Safety Week (COHS) had been observed from 1986-1996. During the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) talks between the governments of Mexico, United States, and Canada, workplace safety within the boundaries of all three nations was discussed by government labour department representatives. Canada's representative suggested to his Mexican and American counterparts that their countries may wish to become involved in a similar endeavor to COHS Week.

Subsequently, CSSE was approached for permission and support to expand the COHS Week format and experience to Mexico and the United States. After many meetings between Labour Canada and the CSSE COHS Committee in 1995, the proposal to expand the COHS format into the North American arena was formalized with the CSSE Board of Directors at their spring 1996 meeting. It was agreed that CSSE would adopt the North American concept and implement it in place of the Canadian Week. Labour Canada agreed to ensure that CSSE was the officially recognized safety organization responsible for NAOSH Week.

In September 1996, the agreement was taken to the NAFTA meeting and all parties agreed to the proposal. NAOSH Week was established.

The goal during Safety and Health Week is to focus employers, employees, partners and the public on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace, at home, and in the community.

On behalf of our AirNow partners – NOAA National Weather Service, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Forest Service, and the U.S. Department of State – EPA is pleased to announce that Air Quality Awareness Week (AQAW) 2019 will be held April 29 – May 3, 2019.

The theme for this year is Check the AQI & Get Outside. Our goal is to promote events that increase air quality awareness and encourage people to check the Air Quality Index (AQI) to find out the best time of the day to be active outdoors.

We plan to focus on the following daily topics this year, featuring one each day on the AQAW website:

  • Monday - Your Heart & Lungs

  • Tuesday - Wildfires & Smoke

  • Wednesday - Air Quality Index & Sensors

  • Thursday - Air Quality and Your Community

  • Friday - Air Quality Around the World

EPA will make the website live Monday, April 29, the first day of AQAW (see https://www.airnow.gov/airaware).

Vaccines work: We are protected together

Celebrated in the last week of April, World Immunization Week aims to promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease. Immunization saves millions of lives every year and is widely recognized as one of the world’s most successful and cost-effective health interventions. Yet, there are still nearly 20 million unvaccinated and under-vaccinated children in the world today.

The theme of this year’s campaign is Protected Together: Vaccines Work!, and the campaign will celebrate Vaccine Heroes from around the world – from parents and community members to health workers and innovators – who help ensure we are all protected, at all ages, through the power of vaccines.
