"When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe." – John Muir

It is an understatement to say that it has been an exceptional year. But if nothing else it has demonstrated just how intimately interconnected our world is and that it is more crucial than ever that we acknowledge the value of this connectivity.

From the DNA we share with each other and other species, to the communications networks that connect us with the rest of the world and our responsibility for the custodianship of the planet and for combatting the climate crisis and the threat of pandemics, no one person is an island.

We are all connected, share one world and need to innovate and collaborate across borders, boundaries and disciplines to tackle global challenges and embrace the opportunities and possibilities ahead.

And science has been a lifeline for many of us this past year. From the tech streaming our entertainment and communications to the scientific breakthroughs that have helped guide us through the pandemic.

So in a year that sees the 20th anniversary of the publication of the first draft of the human genome and the 50th year since the invention of email and the inception of the World food programme, we explore how we are all connected – to each other, to Planet Earth and to the wider Universe – with a Festival theme of ONE WORLD: Science Connects Us.

Digitally we have over 160 online events and experiences for all ages, delivering an exciting mix of exhibitions, presenter-led workshops, science shows, discussions and downloadable family activities.

At our heart, however, we are deliverers of inspirational live experiences. While it won't look quite the same as a normal year, we're delighted to be back in the live game with a focus on outdoor experiences such as walks, tours, trails, exhibitions and installations, which allow audiences to use the city as their playground, safely getting their science fix this summer.

So in all, it’s been a busy year but we are very glad to get back to doing what we love most; bringing inspirational science experiences to the people of Edinburgh and the world.

Check out our programme, spread the word and come and connect with us and with the world of science this summer.
